I know that feeling. It is a punishing kind of existence.
We work late and then we have to get up early.
This is damaging on so many levels. Our bodies don’t get a chance to rebuild properly. Our minds don’t get a chance to relax properly.
We work all day and then again at night.
Why do we do that?
Are we just trying to earn a few extra dollars or take our business to the next level?
I’ll be the first to admit. I’m no expert on relaxing. I work hard and then some. It is really too much.
Often times, I feel that the results are not what they should be. But the truth is, not all of us can be super successful. And hard work or lack thereof is not usually the reason we are not as successful as we want to be.
We have to find our place in life and realize that is pretty much where we are likely to stay.
But no one is content with that frame of mind! Instead, we are always looking for the next thing we can do to ‘improve’ our lives.
The sad thing is that we always think that improvement comes from earning more money. That is a mental trap that is very easy to fall into it.
When We Are Trapped
When we are trapped in the mental state of always looking for ways to make money or thinking that we must work harder at what we already do, we deaden a part of our own souls.
Embrace change, embrace shifts in your mental state. You may open up new horizons in your own awareness.
Perhaps money won’t be so important then.
But the truth is, this is not so easy to do. And achieving that state is not the end to your problems anyway!
There will be new things that you worry about. You see, the human brain is wired to worry about things.
Don’t believe me? Examine your own thinking for a day or two. Pay attention to what your mind ‘dwells’ on.
If you don’t have an immediate problem to solve, your mind will find a future problem (that may not even happen) to worry about!
Is There A Way Out?
When you think about it, there is really something incredibly insane about it all. We really cannot stop worrying over one thing or another, can we?
Our minds are trapped in a kind of prison when you really think about it.
If we don’t worry about our own lives, we worry about our spouse or friends or children.
Is there no way out?
What I am going to suggest to you is that you read the book Zhuan Falun (available in most languages) and look at the meditation practice of Falun Dafa
Maybe your thinking can open up a little bit. Maybe you can change in a really positive way.
Change Is Necessary
If you are working late again. If you are always worried about something, perhaps it is time for a shift in perspective.
When this life is over, everything we physically gained, all of our achievements, all of our worries are for naught at the point of our death.
So, what are we really doing in this world? Do you want to get to the end and walk away with nothing? Or, would you rather start to build something for yourself that will go with you after death?
The answer is obvious, the only question is, do you really get it? Or is this just one more idea that will float right out of your mind while you start to worry about the next thing.
Working late, worrying, what does it really get us in the end?

I thought it was quite amazing yesterday when I first heard about the Russian spy ring in the New England area. The media has chosen to focus on the youngest and perhaps most alluring of the spies: the 28 Year-old Russian woman who was once married to an Englishman.
I guess the first question that comes to mind is why on Earth would the Russians still want to spy on us? What is to be gained? Perhaps the most they can hope for is some intelligence that can help them in making economic deals with the US.
Perhaps even more interesting is the complete lack of actual teeth behind the maximum punishment. It seems that in the old days, spying would bring with it a lifetime sentence or even death (in war time). Yet, the most any of these individuals will get is 5 years and a heroes welcome back in Russia when they get out.
I thought it was an interesting note that the spy ring master has escaped from Cyprus. He just ‘disappeared’. Of course, it is just a coincidence that the government of Cyprus is very communist leaning. That of course, would have nothing to do with the spy ring master’s escape.
I thought it was even more interesting to hear an interview from a restaurant owner in Cambridge. This is the area that many of the spies frequented. The Kennedy School of government is there and many present and future high profile individuals visit this area.
In a sense, it is the perfect place for an information gathering spy to hang out! Of course, the young spy was burdened with technological troubles transmitting her weekly reports from her computer. She allegedly was happy when they supplied her with a Mac. It was commented that this is the computer of choice for spies.
Anyway, I have digressed. The people of the aforementioned town were actually excited to think there were spies in their midst. They were not outraged one bit. They thought it was rather romantic.
Crazy, isn’t it?
Do not believe the hype that Filipino workers are honest and hard workers. I’ve run across a couple that were but I’ve also run across several that I believe have outright lied to me.
If you are going to outsource to the Philippines (or anywhere else) for that matter, here are some tips that might help.
Control! You have to control your workers by setting the standard of what they will be doing. Tell them exactly when you expect them to work and make sure that they are logged into to your favorite chat the entire time they are working so that you can communicate with them.
Although seeing them on Chat doesn’t guarantee they are in front of the computer, if you have any doubts, you or your outsourcing manager could just send them a quick query to see if they are there.
I’ve had Filipinos lie to me and I’ve seen the same story come up with two different outsourcers who didn’t know each other and I was having production or quality problems with both of them. They both would take time off and say something like, “my mother wouldn’t let me work”. Yet, neither one of them lived with their mother.
I also experienced very low production from a worker. She would do about half the work required and then would say something like, I’ll do the rest tomorrow. The problem was that she would get further and further behind. After a month of work, she had actually accomplished less than half of what she agreed to.
My speculation is that she may have been working more than one job, it is difficult to know for sure. She begged me for a second chance, and when I gave her one, she still didn’t complete her work for the next two days. Then she wanted yet another chance.
At that point it become fairly obvious that she was not being fully honest about her schedule and / or her ability to complete the work. This time she had the excuse of being sick. Maybe she was. The point being that there were far too many excuses over the course of a month to warrant continuing to pay her.
This is why I say you sometimes have to set strict guidelines to counteract this type of behavior. It seems she had trouble juggling her time between my work and whatever else she was working on. When asked she would always say I was her only client. But it seems to me that if you have only one client, that you should make that client very happy and she did not.
It really seemed her time was divided elsewhere. So be aware that the hype about outsourcing is just focused on the positive, but there is also a negative. If you can get the work done in house, where you have more control, then my opinion is that you should!
Do not misunderstand me, there are indeed many hard working Filipino outsource workers. You just have to be careful. Monitor, monitor, monitor! If you are not getting the results that you want, then you may consider making ‘adjustments’. You might find some workers here.

It was an amazing story, I would post the site, but I have lost it now. He is only 23 years old. He has been caught and brought up on charges. He had faked his way in to Harvard where a teacher reading one of his attempts at further fraud figured out that he was claiming the work of another professor as his own!
To me this is a combination of youthful naivety (to think you could get all the way through Harvard, or any other college, without getting caught) and a real ability to lie with a perfectly straight face and not care about the cost of your actions to others.
How unfair it is to fake your way into $45,000 in scholarships and grants when others are struggling so hard. I think it is good that he was caught and I truly hope he learns from this.
I personally once owed about that much in student loans and I can tell you that it is a very tough thing to face as a new college grad. It is not fair or right that someone got scholarship money that really wasn’t his at all.
However, I have my doubts that he will be reformed because the sheer size and nature of the fraud and deception leads me to believe that his conscience is buried very deep in his psyche. He has locked it away. He must have to be able to go as far as he did.
Maybe it was just youthful naivety? I do not know. But I do know that what he did was very, very wrong. You have to feel sorry forever got bumped by him at Harvard. That person deserved a Harvard education while this kid did not!

My favorite boss is no longer my boss. But I want to tell you about her and ask you if you have a favorite boss – or have you ever had a favorite boss?
She was quite wonderful as a leader. It wasn’t until later that I realized how skillful she was with people. She could always get me to do work or change a particular behavior. It dawned on me what her secret was: She simply told me about myself.
She had a way of perceiving something about you. I don’t mean something negative. What I mean is that like a fortune teller she would take some aspect of your personality and reflect it back to you.
This was very interesting and nice of her. And it made you feel good. That is why she could get me and others to do things that we wouldn’t normally do.
Do you have a favorite boss? What did you like most about him or her? Do you know anyone like my boss?
If you are fortunate enough to work with someone like that you will find that there are better ways to live and work.

Looks like Illinois Gov Blagojevich has been caught trying to use his unique power to appoint an Illinois Senator to make some extra cash.
They caught him on tape saying something about needing to make money.
I’m not so sure he knows what it means to be behind on a mortgage like regular people do.
I’m glad that he got caught. I don’t think that our elected officials should be allowed to get away with this kind of behavior. It’s evil. And our American society doesn’t need this kind of evil going on.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard – a book by J.K. Rowling is now available.
The Tales are a compilation of fairy tales connected to the world of Harry Potter.
Each tale is annotated by notes from Professor Dumbledore himself.
As you know, the world of Harry Potter has touched the lives of so many people in a profound way. One 19-year-old says of the last book in the series, “This book marks the end of my childhood”.
That is a true testament to how much this book as impacted an entire generation or three :).
There is also a very thoughtful and very interesting collectors edition available. Check out the collectors edition here.
PS. my own book will be out soon.

Flaming is the name given to abusive attacks by email. I’ve been working on the Internet for several years now and it is very, very seldom that I run into this kind of situation. Less than 24 hours ago, I was flamed.
This flaming gave me pause for consideration. In fact, it ruined most of my night yesterday as I thought about it. Even when I wasn’t thinking about it, the feeling was there. It just feels awful to be attacked in such a manner. Being attacked in any manner doesn’t feel good and this was no exception.
My spirtual beliefs tell me that when someone does something bad to you they must either pay you back in some way or you are paying them back. This could be for something done in this lifetime or, as in the case of someone you never meant and don’t know, it could be payback from a previous life.
I understand that not everyone shares my belief in past lives and reincarnation but that is another story. I don’t want to digress. There is still gold here for those who don’t agree with my beliefs. Besides, my beliefs do not require anyone else to believe as I do.
In this case, I had written a very innocent email to a group of people about a particular item used for ‘natural healing’. I explained what I thought and why I thought it and even where my information came from. I even admitted that there was no scientific proof, just years of observation to back up my opinion.
Next thing I know someone is attacking me. This person took what I said out-of-context, blew it out of proportion and was defending a position that I didn’t have any issues with. But he had issues with what I said and by the end of the email he attacked my work – which is basically a personal attack.
Keep in mind this was work that he had never read and knew not what it contained, but he felt that he should attack it anyway. Basically, I was shocked.
I responded to his email and explained that he hadn’t read what I had written and that I didn’t appreciate being attacked by him. But, I wondered, what is the point?
This person obviously isn’t coming from a place of calm or reason. He attacked me for something I didn’t say and I mean really attacked me. He dug into me as if we had some kind of personal problem with each other.
I’ve been wondering: what was the correct way to handle this? As I see it, there are really two problems. One is my own reaction. The second is what is the correct response?
On the first point, let me clarify, I did not respond in kind to this person. I did not attack him in return. But what concerns me most is my own feelings. Why did I feel so upset? I know that when you put yourself out in public, you can expect to be attacked once in a while.
I pride myself on staying calm in difficult situations. However, as I am only human, I do slip. Yet, I want to overcome these shortcomings and this is one more test for me in that journey. I still have much work to do on myself – that much is clear.
I really have nothing to defend and I don’t have a real investment in fighting to prove some point of view that means nothing to anyone when you come right down to it. Yet, even though I didn’t flame back, the emotion was there.
Let me illustrate this problem with another example. Some people advocate non-violent communication. They have correctly deduced that if you work on removing violence from your communication, it is harder for violence to manifest physically – not impossible, just more difficult. I admire these folks for their hard work to make themselves better.
For me, I strive to go one step further. Violence, in my opinion, starts a step or two deeper than communication. It starts with that feeling in the heart. It is a feeling of injustice, a feeling of anger, a feeling of indignation. Even worse, it could be the feeling of hate.
The human heart then is the problem. That is where I strive to change myself. And it is much harder than you might imagine.
Therefore, perhaps how I responded was not the problem, it is how I wanted to respond that IS the problem. I honestly wanted to punch this guys lights out. I confess that is a violent thought. And I am saddened that I still have this type of reaction after years of trying to cleanse my heart of such things. Worse, I thought that he was a total moron, an idiot who is completely irrational and even ‘stupid’.
These are all bad things in my opinion. I should not have felt this way, but I did. I should not have had such thoughts, but I did. That makes me sad. The good news is that I didn’t flame this person back. There is a time in my life when I would have. I’m glad that time is in the past.
Unfortunately, the feeling was there. My wish is that I could have immediately felt total compassion for this person, even though he had ‘wronged’ me. My wish is that I could have responded from a place that was completely unconcerned for my personal reputation or need to defend my thoughts or position.
I look forward to further character development. I hope I get there quickly. This is also the answer to the second question: How should I have responded? The simple answer is, my response will always be the right one if I come from a heart of kindness, tolerance and compassion.
Sadly, such a state of mind is a long distance away for most of us here on planet Earth. Never-the-less, I have to get there. It is the only place of being that makes sense.

Should I give or not? This is the major question that anyone desiring to be charitable has to answer. Sometimes, it is difficult to choose an answer.
Many people in Kansas City will claim to be homeless in order to obtain ‘free’ money. The problem is they just don’t fit the part, even though they almost always have a good story.
A person isn’t homeless if he has good shoes and a fresh haircut. Someone can’t be out on the street for months and be overweight. It just isn’t something that is possible. If you are that well fed, you can’t possibly be homeless. I’m sure someone will disagree with me. Perhaps there is a soup kitchen open or something of that nature? But I think, basically speaking, if you are so well fed, you really aren’t totally destitute.
I’ve heard and seen some crazy stories in an attempt to get some money out of my pocket. They almost always seem believable until you dig a little deeper.
Others don’t even try, “I ran out of gas and need a few dollars to make it home” or “Can I have some change for the bus”. The problem is that they are in the same spot every weekend telling the same story.
There are those who make a very good tax free living from panhandling. A local paper just ran a story about a man who said he makes over $80,000 tax free per year from begging. I have seen him around many times. I know who they were referring to.
I think I did run into a truly homeless person once. He had long, very dirty hair and he had shoes that were old, blackened and full of holes. He was happy to receive a couple of cookies. The fake homeless only want money and they might even turn their noses up when you offer them food.
My friend took a ‘homeless’ man into a restaurant to buy him some food. He didn’t even eat. Instead he read the paper and asked for a box when it was time to leave. Not thirty minutes before that he had asked us for some money so he could get something to eat.
Dig a little deeper and you’ll find that a lot of ‘homeless’ stories are fabrications. True, there may be some that choose this lifestyle, but then they aren’t really looking to help themselves. But, they will be glad for you to help them. Do you help or not? You have to decide. There is no easy way to make hard choices.
