We are writing to alert you to a troubling development regarding internationally-respected, Chinese human rights attorney Gao Zhisheng. As you may recall, Mr. Gao provoked the ire of China’s Communist regime because of his steadfast and highly visible defense of Falun Gong practitioners and others whose rights are severely curtailed in China. In December, he was sentenced to three years imprisonment for subversion charges and placed under house arrest. Since then, Mr. Gao and members of his family have been under the constant surveillance of Chinese officials.
In a startling open letter to the U.S. Congress that was released last week, Mr. Gao exposed the Chinese Communist regime’s worsening suppression of human rights. Then, on September 22, an eyewitness reported seeing Chinese agents removing Mr. Gao from his home.
Another likely reason for Mr. Gao’s apprehension is the re cent English publication of his new book, A More Just China, which includes his findings on torture methods the Chinese regime uses on Falun Gong practitioners. It also describes Mr. Gao’s personal journey from a youth spent in rural poverty to his prominence as an attorney. More information about the book is available at: www.broadbook.com.
As of this writing, Gao Zhisheng’s whereabouts remain unknown. To learn more, please visit: www.fofg.org/news/news_story.php?doc_id=1431.
Friends of Falun Gong will continue to monitor Mr. Gao’s situation and will share what we learn with you. Meanwhile, please contact your elected officials and ask for their support in gaining his immediate release. Thank you for your concern. Please share this message with others you know who wish to end the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Gong and thei r supporters in China.
