As I have been reflecting on life recently,
I thought I would share some of what I have
discovered along the way. At the still
young age of 37, the world looks a lot different
than it did 10 years ago.
One of the biggest changes is that some,
but probably not all of my naivete is gone.
It used to be that I would give people
the benefit of the doubt beyond what is
Oh, I still try to be kind and compassionate
to others, it’s just that I’m more aware of
people’s shortcomings . And I think that is one
of the tricks to life. Being kind despite
the abuses one suffers at the hands of other
human beings is a skill that is worthy of
Let’s face it, the naked face of
human nature is not the most pleasant
thing to gaze upon. One doesn’t really
need to live that long on this planet to
realize that truth.
When we are younger though, I think this
truth often escapes us and may lead one
to think the world is unjustly harsh.
The fact is that everyone feels it, but we often
think it is only ourselves that are suffering
such hardships, mostly at the hands of our
fellow human beings.
My brother, committed suicide at the
very young age of 22, almost 13 years
ago now. But I think he suffered from
the above malady.
That is, he may have thought his suffering
to be unjust after enduring the betrayal
of several close friendships. Perhaps it
was just too much to take. And he
responded in the way he thought was best
at the time.
Of course, we deprive ourselves of the
opportunity to grow and improve
under such circumstances. Suicide is
definitely NOT the right thing to do.
But some people still do it. Unfortunately,
Regardless of your religious or spiritual
beliefs, it is almost universally agreed upon
that suicide is a bad thing. However,
that doesn’t stop many people, including
my own brother.
However, what I meant to point out is
that many, many people will step on you
to get what they want or at the very least,
be unconcerned about the effects their
actions have upon you.
So I have learned that it is a good idea,
to think about how your actions may
affect others before you act. If you can
really do this, you can smooth over a lot
of problems in relationships before they
Being thoughtful in this way can enrich
your life and you may the quality of your
relations and interactions with others
improve greatly. Unfortunately many
people at various ages just are not there
Thinking of others is something that is
taught in many spiritual disciplines.
I believe my study of Zhuan Falun, the main
book of Falun Dafa practice has contributed
to my ability to see the great wisdom of
You know we are only here on this planet
for just a handful of decades and then it is
over. Perhaps the lessons we learn or don’t
learn here determine what our futures will
