Chinese Authorities Secretly Moving Falun Gong Adherents Out of Beijing
Beijing-area detention facilities being stocked with “transformed” individuals ready to denounce Falun Gong in front of foreign media

NEW YORK – The Falun Dafa Information Center has learned that Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities have moved genuine Falun Gong adherents out of Beijing-area prisons and labor camps, replacing them with individuals who claim to have renounced Falun Gong. The Center believes the move is meant to mislead foreign media, mirroring similar tactics used in the past.

On July 30th, the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (CIPFG) published Torture Outside the Olympic Village: A Guide to China’s Labor Camps (report), a detailed guide to detention facilities located within miles of Olympic venues. On August 3, the Center released a related report, A Journalist’s Walking Guide to the Persecution of Falun Gong in Beijing (report).

According to Center sources in China, immediately after the publication of these reports, the Chinese authorities began moving Falun Gong adherents out of Beijing. These sources say many adherents were moved to Shanxi Forced Labor Camp and Shanxi Women’s Forced Labor Camp, while some were sent to Inner Mongolia.

These sources also indicate the authorities are putting individuals who claim to have “renounced” Falun Gong into Beijing detention centers and prisons where they are typically treated very well and made available to foreign media who are investigating abuses against Falun Gong.

“They’re moving victims of torture and other abuses out of Beijing, and replacing them with individuals who parrot the CCP’s stance on Falun Gong,” says Center spokesperson Mr. Erping Zhang. “Think about it…they are preparing ‘show tours’ to pull the wool over the eyes of the international community. We trust journalists in Beijing won’t be taken in by these tactics.”

“Show tours” of this nature have been employed before by CCP authorities to thwart investigations of abuse against Falun Gong, and were previously forewarned by Center sources.

On April 26, 2001, the Falun Dafa Information Center reported that Masanjia Labor Camp in Liaoning Province was among a few facilities being readied to receive foreign and Chinese media to ‘interview’ selected Falun Gong practitioners.

Almost a month later reporters were invited to the Masanjia Labor Camp to witness freshly painted walls, prisoners decked out in new jump suits complete with their names written on the back in Chinese and English (it was not clear why prisoners needed their names written in English inside a Chinese labor camp), enjoying an apparently clean and healthy environment – all in stark contrast with the horrific abuses reported by dozens of individuals who had previously been held and tortured at Masanjia.

The Center urges media workers in Beijing to be cognizant of this tactic, and recommends the following steps to avoid being misled by the CCP:

Coordinate several groups of journalists to go to different camps at the same time, making it more difficult for the CCP to orchestrate a “show tour.”
Interview individuals recently released from labor camps in China, but currently residing overseas, including ones who witnessed similar foreign visits and measures taken by authorities prior to them. The Falun Dafa Information Center can provide the contact information for these individuals, as well as for family members of those currently being detained at Beijing camps and prisons.

Beijing Detainee Beaten into Coma;
Husband Had Met Secretly with European Parliament VP

NEW YORK, NY — The Falun Dafa Information Center has learned that 46-year-old Ms. Zhang Lianying was beaten into a coma on March 20, 2007, while detained at the Beijing Women’s Labor Camp. Zhang required emergency surgery to treat a massive brain hemorrhage and has since regained consciousness, but police have hand-cuffed her to the hospital bed and she remains under threat of further torture and abuse.

According to sources familiar with her case, Zhang was first abducted by Chinese police on June 14, 2005, when she was taken from her home and sent to a forced labor camp for 2 1/2 years simply because she is an adherent of Falun Gong. While imprisoned, Zhang repeatedly suffered beatings that left her unable to walk properly and her face disfigured, according to these sources. In one instance on February 27, 2006, Zhang was beaten so severely she was hospitalized for 50 days. From that point on, authorities cut off all contact between her and her husband, Mr. Niu Jinping.

Niu kept working to free her, however. In May 2006, Vice President of the European Parliament, Mr. Edward McMillan-Scott, visited China to investigate human rights abuses. Niu met with McMillan-Scott and briefed him on the plight of his wife and other Falun Gong practitioners that were being held and often tortured in custody throughout China.

Afterward, Chinese authorities did not let up in their treatment of Zhang, and may have intentionally escalated her abuse. While detained at the Beijing Women’s Labor Camp, officials repeatedly instigated inmates to torture Zhang by wrapping a rope around her neck, tightening it until she was nearly unconscious and then proceeding to beat her violently about the face and head. These sources say she was subjected to this torture over a period of several months until, on the morning of March 20, 2007, while being tortured in this manner Zhang collapsed. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, and fell into a coma.

Another Falun Gong practitioner had met with McMillan-Scott last May, and he suffered clear retaliation from Chinese officials for having done so. Along with Niu, Mr. Cao Dong had further briefed McMillan-Scott on the abuses and torture of Falun Gong practitioners, including by providing evidence of how labor camps supply living, healthy Falun Gong practitioners to hospitals where they are killed for their vital organs. (report) According to a written statement from McMillan-Scott, Cao “said he definitely knew of [organ harvesting camps] and knew people who had been sent to these camps. He had seen the cadaver of one of his friends, a Falun Gong practitioner, with holes in his body where the organs had been removed.”

Shortly after leaving the meeting with McMillan-Scott, Cao was abducted by Chinese police, his whereabouts unknown for several months. Cao was later sentenced to 5 years in prison for taking part in the meeting. Cao was officially charged with “disrupting social order” and “propagating Falun Gong.”

“These cases are a horrific reminder that the Chinese Communist authorities have no genuine interest in improving human rights,” stated Falun Dafa Information Center spokesperson Levi Browde. “Nearly beating one man’s wife to death and throwing the other man in prison for 5 years is not the way you reward your citizenry for identifying injustices.” Browde adds, “We applaud the work of McMillan-Scott and call on the international community to follow his lead by investigating the atrocities against Falun Gong, and maintaining pressure on the Chinese regime to uphold human rights.”
