This Mouthwash Can Stain Your Teeth…

Gingivitis / Gum DiseaseChlorhexidine is a powerful chemical formula that is prescribed as a mouthwash mostly after dental surgery in the United States. This mouthwash may also be prescribed for various other situations.

Most often you will also receive a warning not to use it for more than two or a few weeks. This is because Chlorhexidine can stain your teeth.

Things are little different in Europe than in the United States. Some things are sold over-the-counter there that you cannot get without a prescription in the United States.

I was in a drug store in Germany and found some Chlorhexidine. I was initially excited because it claimed to be an “anti-staining’ formula. Since I was travelling and did not have access to the tools I normally use for my daily oral care, I thought I’d give this ‘anti-staining’ formula a try.

Forget it! Within a week I could see that it was beginning to stain my teeth. I promptly stopped using it.

Dental health is a problem for almost every human being alive. There is a small percentage of the population that appears to be immune to gum disease, but most of us have to fight against it at one point or another.

In fact, as I recall, I found a stat on the Mayo Clinic’s website stating that 95% of people over age 65 have some form of gum disease. If true, the implications are staggering! Just think about it.

The problem is that this is not a disease that happens as a result of aging as many people think. You can be six years old and have the disease. What is important is that people become more aware of it.

Even your dentist will tell you that your dental health is largely up to what you do at home! They can only see you a couple to a few times a year at most. That does mean that the bulk of the work in caring for your dental health falls on you personally. This is one of those things that we pretty much have to do for ourselves!

Learn what you can do to help stop the progression of gum disease based on what you do at home. Prevent this serious problem from causing you to lose teeth.

Pregnancy Increases Your Risk For Developing Gum Disease…

It is understandable that the excitement of pregnancy keeps you busy in many ways. A simple word of caution is recommended here: This is an especially important time to look after your dental health.

Actually, some would suggest that this is the time to really pay attention to overall health and well-being. There is an old saying about the number of teeth missing being equal to the number of children a mother gives birth too.

Though certainly not one-hundred percent accurate, there may be a kernel of truth in this. The fact is that women are more likely to develop gum health problems during pregnancy. Hormones have a great role to play in this scenario.
If you are a mother-to-be, pay special attention to your oral health. Do not be content with just brushing and flossing. Consider using a a good oral irrigator.

Another excellent product to consider would be an oxygenated, ph balanced mouthwash. There are many mouthwashes on the market but very few that harness the power of oxygen with a proper pH. The importance of this should not be overlooked.
Chew xylitol gum. Xylitol has been used in Finland since WWII and they have found that the incidence of dental disease is lower as a result. Xylitol is fine for human consumption but keep it away from pets.

Make sure there is someone looking at your gums a little more frequently during pregnancy – just to make sure that problems are not creeping in. As mentioned before, the probability for developing gingivitis / gum disease increases during pregnancy. If you do not know what you are looking for, then you need someone who can help. Besides, it is not so easy for a person to examine her own mouth.
Ask your practitioner about your pocket depths and how they relate to the health of your gums and teeth. Next, learn more about this topic from the next links.

People are Funny Creatures…

Have you ever had the distinct notion that people really do not know what they want or even what they are looking for? I believe this to be true because you can find someone who states that they want a solution to something. You offer them the perfect solution and yet they are not interested.

Next, you see this person get something that you know for sure is not going to help them solve the problem they stated to you. It is really interesting.

You try to help someone and they turn down that help and go in a direction that you know will not help them. Some people have to learn the hard way, I guess. In fact, it seems that most people have to learn the hard way.

It is also insulting when people don’t trust you enough to take your advice. But, that is life. Everyone, is living in a world of confusion. If they knew the perfect answer for themselves, they wouldn’t be looking for any answers.

This shows how incredibly ignorant human kind is. I am not singling anyone out here. I am including myself. So do not think that I am talking directly to you. I really mean all of us that are human.

Take the topic of gum disease for example. It is an important problem that many people have. Yet, most people are not aware that they even have gum disease. They will not believe you even if you tell them.

However, the statistics that dental care professionals share with us indicate that up to 80% of people have gum disease right now. You can talk to people until you are blue in the face about this problem, but they still won’t believe they have it or that they should do anything about it.

It is kind of like bad breath. Many people have it, but they don’t seem to realize that they have it. They get use to their own breath.

We live in a strange world.

Are We Connected Or Isolated…?

I overheard an interesting conversation the other day. The woman that was talking to another said that she believes we are all ‘connected’.

After thinking it over for a bit, a few questions came to mind.

If we are all connected then why do people feel lonely at times? One would presume that if we were all connected that it would be impossible to feel isolated or lonely.

Another thought is that if we are all connected why do we have so much trouble understanding each other?

Why do people miscommunicate so often? This doesn’t require much explanation because frankly, everyone has experienced the effect of misunderstandings in even the most basic of human communication.

Why are their wars? If we were so wonderfully connected there shouldn’t be any warfare. Any issues that come up would be rapidly solved by the innated understanding that should come from being connected.

Why is there so much diversity in our various belief systems and backgrounds. Let us face it, many cultures are almost diametrically opposed. One cultures ‘normal’ idea is another’s radical thought. This is similar to freedom fighters and terrorism. What one man calls a terrorist, another man will call a freedom fighter. This is living proof that our perceptions and beliefs are radically different from each other.

One some people call evil, others call good. How can this be? If something is bad or evil, it just is so. Why would someone else call it good?

With so many different ways of thinking, so many different believes, so many different value systems and all the variations of human thinking – how could we be all ‘connected’.

I’m not sure there is a good answer to this. All I can say is that if *I* were in charge – all of these problems would go away! Ok- Just kidding. I’m not such an egoist.

I am not sure how to answer these questions, but feel free to comment if you believe you have the answers!

Is It Time for North Americans To Learn Spanish?

It is quite amazing how the United States is already becoming a country of two languages. One official: English. One unofficial: Spanish.

There is a growing trend among companies in the US to support Spanish speaking customers. For instance, many cell phone companies offer an option for English or Spanish on their phone prompt menus. This can only be because a large portion of their billable clients are Spanish speakers.

While some choose to simply feel annoyed by this trend, others are willing to embrace learning a new language.

In Europe it is really no big deal to be multi-lingual.

Health wise, there are actually studies that show you are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s or at least stave off the effects of the disease until later if you know more than one language. Does that mean that language learning is exercise for the brain?

It’s an interesting thought. Maybe it is time to learn Spanish?
