Read These Coyote Hunting Tips Before You Leave Home

An experienced hunter will tell you there are many of the same rules you should follow no matter what you are hunting.  These are so you will not spook the animal, and most animals are easily spooked by anything that does not belong in their home.  An outdoor adventure guide will give you basic rules to follow so you are able to get close enough to the animals to get a good look or shot at them.

You also need to hunt each animal a little differently, which is why coyote hunting tips are so valuable to someone not very experienced at it.  Camouflage clothing that matches your surroundings is extremely important, so when they do look your way, they cannot easily tell you are a person.  The importance of having all the skin, including the face, covered depends on whom you listen to, but as our skin is reflective, it makes sense to cover it.  Any movement can spook an animal, so if you have to move, do so slowly.

The number one tip is to scout the area to make sure it is coyote territory. These are areas with timber, ditches, grassy areas, water holes and sections with a lot of cover.  Next look for sign they have been in the area recently like new as well as old tracks, dens and scats (droppings) and a high concentration of their prey.  You can also ask the local landowners as they usually know and are all too happy to get rid of them.  To skip this step would be like fishing in a dry riverbed.  You should always hunt with a partner for safety and the ability to watch the area with less movement.

Coyotes have a good sense of smell, so you want to be downwind of them when doing the distressed animal call or setting up to shoot.  The sun at your back, so it blinds the coyote if he looks at you can help as well as standing in the shadows.  There is also a difference in the sound a cottontail rabbit makes compared to a jackrabbit, so get the right call for your area.

You need to make sure there are coyote in the area, then make yourself as invisible to them as possible with no sounds or sudden movements.  You should stay downwind from them, call low, and then get gradually louder after 3 or 4 times low.  If there is no sign of a coyote after 20 minutes, try somewhere else.
