Speaking / Reading a foreign language

Can you remember a time when you overheard a convesation in another language and really, really wished you knew what was being said?

I have. I still do. I have friends that speak a foreign language and sometimes they forget I’m there and speak in their native tongue. I’m left wondering, or trying to figure out what they are saying.

Woudn’t it be great if we had some device that could instantly translate foreign languages for us?

You bet it would!!!

At least we can solve the reading problem. Really? Yes!

See those flags at the top of the page up there. Click on one of them and this entire site will be translated to that language.

What does that mean? It means that people that speak Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Italian, French, German and Porteguese can all read this entire blog. Actually, they can read this entire site, including the forums and the article directory!

This is cool stuff. People from all over the world can read this site in their native language.

If you speak another language click on the corresponding flag above and check it out!

Some people reading this have websites too. And I know that you might want to know how you can have the same thing for your website. Guess what? You CAN!!

Here is the translation software I use.

    Hi there,

Took a look at the Spanish translation. Automatic translation is a nice feature to have on your blog/website, though you shouldn’t be too enthousiastic about it. If you really want to have an idea of its real performance, you should translate one of your pages to any of the languages supported and then back-translate it into English. You will see that this translation software is useful to get an approximate gist of what is being said, but not much more. It is difficult to find a whole sentence without a language mistake, and many sentences are confusing or utterly incomprehensible. But as I said, it is a nice feature to have on your website (but I would warn your visitors that they shouldn’t expect a correct translation, just an automatic translation that will help them get the gist).

    Cheers,

    Jaime

P.S. By the way, Google and others offer this kind of website feature (automatic translation) for free…

    Jaime,

Thank you for pointing that out. I guess I didn’t even consider that in the wake of my enthusiasm and excitement for what I thought was pretty cool.

It makes me sad to think that some of the sentences don’t make any sense. That is too bad. I would have liked to think that everything was perfect and everyone around the world could thoroughly enjoy the site.

Anyway, I’ll leave it up because maybe someone will get something useful out of it.
