The Importance of Honesty in Life

Silly question: Has anyone ever lied to you? Even our own family members and friends lie to us on occassion.

However, it seems that the depth of knowing someone is inversely proportional to the harm of the lie.

For example, usually when our friends and family lie to us it is to protect our fragile egos.

But it seems that the less someone knows us the bigger the potential lie. This is not to say that all strangers are liars. No. Not everyone lies. Sometimes, in destructive relationships the biggest liar is the one we know best.

Why is lying so predominant in human lives? People lie for selfish reasons. They lie to protect themselves or to take something they want from others.

Integrity is so important because a person of integrity will be entrusted to ever greater degrees by those around him or her.

Integrity is important to our society as well. Without it. We cannot survive. When no one trusts anyone, little can be accomplished without great efforts. Lying tears at the bricks that hold society up. Every lie breaks us down a little further as a society.

Every act of integrity builds the walls of society higher.

Ask yourself, am I building society up or tearing it down with this action I’m contemplating.

If you are tearing it down for personal gain or personal protection, then you are part of the problem. If you are willing to sacrifice a little for the sake of integrity, then not only are you building society up but you are building your own character up.

Become ever greater through integrity. Make that a motto and you will sleep soundly at night, enjoy life’s simple pleasures and bring a smile with you wherever you go. You will be a benevolent person and life will smile back at you.
